History of Brainrots

Before the advent and democratization of artificial intelligence, there were already forms of content on the internet that can now be considered the ancestors of brainrot.Even without AI tools capable of automatically generating images or videos, users produced visuals that were deliberately incoherent, absurd, and funny. This content was mainly created using photomontages, particularly with software such as Photoshop, which allowed elements to be assembled without any real logic.

The Strawberry Elephant

For example, we can see the Strawberry Elephant and the Smurf Cat. These images, although technically simple, stood out for their absurdity and humor.

Smurf Cat

In early 2025, many people began to notice the appearance of a new type of image on the Internet: square images generated by artificial intelligence. They most often featured animals, accompanied by absurd names, sometimes funny, sometimes completely illogical, but always related in some way to the animal depicted. This combination of a realistic image and a deliberately ridiculous name made this content immediately recognizable. One of the first examples to go viral was “Tralalero Tralala.” This visual quickly attracted attention and was reposted, repurposed, and shared on numerous platforms. For many, this moment marks the real emergence of brainrot as we know it today: a format born with AI, based on absurdity, repetition, and deliberately simple humor, which then spread very quickly on social media.

Since then, numerous YouTube channels have specialized in brainrots. They no longer simply publish absurd images: some tell complete stories, others create original memes, and some even compose songs based on these characters and absurd worlds. Among the best-known channels are Brainrot, DeepBrain, and AI Brainrot. These channels are contributing to the spread and growth of the phenomenon by bringing brainrots to life in an interactive and often humorous way, and by building a real culture around this type of content.
